Born on July 11 1990 at the District of Haryana. She studied at the Sirsa district of Haryana during her school days Her grandfather encouraged her to play and train jockey and joined to Sports Authority of India or SAI at the center of Hisar. Sunder Singh was her mentor for in her early years in hockey. After her dad buy her a hockey kit, she became serious to the sport. Savita started practicing as midfielder in a hockey team. After a year her coach considered her to opt for goalkeeping. This is the way to increase the chances of her for selection to be part of Indian team.
At the age of 17, she selected for National team in 2007, and became a member in hockey to play in Junior Asia Cup. Punia played over 100 matches on International Level. She also made the her first International debut in Netherlands and Germany on year of 2008. Junior Asia Cup of 2009 she played her First International match. She played more than 100 games have been played on International level.
In 2015 Malaysia held the Hockey India Annual Awards, She captured honor for her to be outstanding on field performance. She received a 1 lakh rupees as a best performance. Punia give her best performance in the last minute of match. She stand at the penalty corners against Japan that helped India to win by the score of 1-0. This win helped the Indian Hockey Women's team to be qualify for the Rio Olympics after 3 decades.
In 2017 her performance in the Hawke’s Bay Cup in New Zealand directed the Indian Hockey team to finished 6th in tournament. Same year Punia and her amazing performance led the team to beat Chile on round 2 of the final match.
In 2018, she made an outstanding save against China in the final match in the Asia Cup she was goalkeeper of tournament award. This win help the team to qualify for World Cup in London 2018. She also received the Arjuna Award in 2018.
On 2022, Savita Punia to lead a Indian Women’s Hockey Team she is the Captain of the team.
